Quinn's Letter 2015

Dear Quinn,

Wow!  You turned five this week.  FIVE!  That is a pretty big deal.  I mean you are now old enough to go to Kindergarten and your age takes up one whole hand.  Official big kid status around here these days.  I have to admit, while I do sometimes miss having a sweet squishy baby around, I really love this stage in our lives.  You are pretty agreeable and we can basically do anything we want at anytime with little notice.  It is pretty awesome.  You are pretty awesome!

Here is a snapshot of FIVE year old Quinn.

- You are super smart.  You can basically read anything with little effort. Example- at Costco, you read a sign that says, "Get cash back" while eating your hotdog, and instantly want to know how you can get cash back! I think you were just born with the code for reading in your brain.  It is amazing. You are also working on your number sense and are doing a great job with adding and subtracting numbers, as well as, counting in different ways (by tens, fives, twos, etc.)  You can write your name like a champ and you are branching out to other words as well.

- You love babies.  We added two new babies to our family over the last year, and you are totally smitten with both of them.  You love to tickle them and play peak-a-boo.  And you love to try to comfort Olive and breast feed her.  You will probably be really embarrassed about that one day, but you shouldn't be.  It's sweet and natural and so loving.

- You have never met a stranger.  You make friends everywhere we go.  I can send you into any new situation and you will come out with a friend, and possibly trying to arrange a play date.  You are the queen of hugs!

- You are creative and imaginative.  You have an imaginary friend named Megamort, and he is pregnant/has a baby named Susan.  And while, Megamort drives me a little nuts, I love to see you using your imagination.  You asked for and received an Animal costume and a set of drums for your birthday!  That is pretty cool.

- You love preschool and you are a big helper to your teacher and classmates.  You have grown and learned so much this year in school.  We are really going to miss your preschool teachers, but we are so excited for you to start Kindergarten.

- You love to draw rainbows and suns. I truly don't think you have one favorite color (and that is why it changes all the time), but rather you love the rainbow of colors.  And you almost always put it in ROYGBIV order.  I told you- you are smart!

- You weigh 30 lbs and are 40 inches tall.

- You love all things Disney.  You love princesses.  You love villains more. I think The Little Mermaid is still your ultimate favorite, but it changes from time to time.   \

- You love Legos.  You especially love building The Simpson Legos with Dad.

- You are still a picky eater.  You do LOVE tuna though.  It is your lunch of choice.

- You love your dance class, and we are excited to see you preform at your recital in a couple of weeks.

- You are funny.  You are kind,  You are bossy.  You are caring.  You are nurturing.  You are silly.  . You are easy going.  You are smart.  You are hilarious.  You are friendly.  You are helpful. You are beautiful inside and out!

love you!

-

The Three B's

Last night, I was texting back and forth with VaRonica about the three B's- birth, babies, and breastfeeding-since she is due in the middle of March, which is right around the corner, people. I am going to be an aunt in less than two months!  We are really excited about a new baby around here.

Our conversation really got me thinking about Quinn's birth, and my experiences with her and the three B's, both as a pregnant woman, and a mom.

(Disclaimer:  we weren't actually calling them the three B's last night, it is just something clever I came up with right now to give my post a theme.)

First B:  Birth

During pregnancy:  I had planned to have an unmedicated, vaginal birth.  Then, things went very badly, very quickly.  I love that the Resident that delivered me gave me the option to still deliver Quinn the way I had wanted and planned, but warned that it was unlikely that the baby would not tolerate labor, and that a c-section was the best way to go.  And even though, I never imagined in a million years that I would have c-section, I knew it was the medically sound choice.

As a mom:  I mourned the loss of a "normal" birth and pregnancy.  I was sad that I never went into labor and got big and pregnant, but for the most part, never looked back.  I also had to mourn the loss of future pregnancy and babies, but again, it felt like the right choice.

Second B:  Babies

During pregnancy:  I pictured myself having a big nine or ten pound baby.  I avoided buying newborn sized clothes.  I worried about being due at the same time as the school year starting, and tried to make decisions about my maternity leave.

As a mom:  I had a one pound baby, that did not even fit into preemie sized clothes.  I got to split my maternity leave into two sections, and have all summer off. I was stretched as a person in a way I could have never imagined, and loved in a way that was also new and exhilarating.  Quinn was such a good and easy baby. She was happy, and made my new role in life easy, despite all the medical complications.

I would never want to go through all that again (and would never want to see another child suffer like that), but it was my reality, and it was actually manageable.  I feel ok with the fact that my introduction to motherhood was dramatic and anything but normal.

Third B:  Breastfeeding

During pregnancy:  I figured I  would breastfeed for at least one year, but more likely 18 months to two years. I knew that breastfeeding was the most healthy option for mom and baby, and also the most cost efficient.

As a mom:  The NICU was very pro-breast milk, not so much pro-breast feeding.  I exclusively pumped for months, and received little support from the lactation team at the hospital.  When it came time to get to actually nurse Quinn, they were always watching, interfering, and trying to make it about numbers and weight. As Quinn's resistance to the bottle grew, the less I actually got to breast feed.  It was frustrating, and got in the way of the good thing we had going.

When Quinn got home, concerns we being raised about her weight gain, and my breast feeding was further limited, until I was encouraged to go back to exclusive pumping right as my maternity leave was ending.  I just couldn't do it.   I had about two and half months of breast milk stored, and Quinn continued to receive that, mixed with formula (for calories) until she was ten months old.

And while I know why I made the choice to stop nursing/pumping, I have never really come to terms with it.  I guess because breastfeeding was so important to me, and I knew breast milk was so important to Quinn.  And because, after months of not being able to hold her or care for her, it was the most normal and natural thing I got to do with my baby.  And because, it felt like other people's actions and opinions influenced me/practically forced (because I didn't want to do anything to hurt Quinn) into something that would have never been my choice.  I just really wish I would have stuck to my guns, and nursed Quinn for at least the first year of her life.

It is funny.  If you would have asked the pregnant me, what would be worse- this being your only pregnancy, or not breastfeeding for year?  I would have answered, one pregnancy.  But the answer now is the opposite.  It has been the hardest thing of the three B's to face a different outcome than the one I predicted.  Life is funny that way.

Sleeping

My sleep training over Winter Break was a bust in the long term. Quinn is now sleeping in our bed from about one a.m. until I get her up in the morning. This is a problem, only because she has increasingly become a bed hog, and super restless. I like having her in bed with us to a certain extent. She is warm, cuddly, and she will only be this small and young for this period of time. However, some nights I just need my sleep without a wild, little kinkajou in my bed.

Here are some ideas I have been brainstorming.

1. Do some more sleep training, and possibly include some crying it out. No guarantees I can stick to my guns on this one. I don't think anyone likes to hear their baby cry, but throw in a mama who couldn't even hold their baby for the first month of their lives, and it becomes even harder.

2. Move her crib into our room, and make her sleep in it. Then she'll be close, but not too close. But will hopefully, be close enough to sleep in her crib.

3. Super baby proof her room and put a double mattress on the floor, and get rid of the crib. She always sleeps better in our bed than the crib and then we can lay with her in her bed, but sneak away without the transition from rocker to crib. And if she gets up and parties in the dark, well that is what she'll do. We'll make it super safe.

4. Stop worrying about. Face the fact that she will be coming to our bed for the time being. Embrace the cuddles and the squirms, and remain semi- tired.

Thoughts?

Tooth

Last Thursday, Quinn slipped in the tub while trying to lick the faucet and chipped her front tooth. We took her to the dentist the next day, and he told us the chip was just superficial. (I translated this to mean cosmetic.)

I am pretty bummed out. I mean, obviously I was glad her tooth was not damaged, but I hate that her smile has been altered. I obviously also know it is just a baby tooth, but it is a baby tooth, she'll have for the next six years.
I obviously know this is not a major life problem, but I feel like it is right now.

Oh, the joys of motherhood worry and guilt.

In related news, Quinn loves to brush her teeth. She begs and whines for it throughout the day. She says, " bruuuu teeee" as she mimes the action. So cute!

Here is Quinn brushing her teeth and showing me how she brushes her teeth a couple of days before the accident.

Sick

So, I woke up around midnight last night and did not feel well. I went back to sleep and dreamt about a package in my stomach and delivering it out of my mouth. That's when I threw up. I then had to call for a sub, and make sub plans for my student teacher in the morning (this week I teach mornings, she teaches afternoons, and then she takes over completely next week until the end of March.).

Quinn did me a solid by sleeping until 6:30. Dalan did me another solid by laying with her on the couch until 9:30. I also got major nap in this afternoon. I am feeling semi-better this evening, and plan to return to work tomorrow, plus we are seeing South Pacific tomorrow night and I don't want to miss that.

Rockin' It Out

We have been rocking it out with Quinn for over a week now with mixed results.  Overall, I would say she has slept in her crib more and woken up less, but it has not been perfect.  There have been A plus nights, and nights when both Quinn and we have earned big, fat F's.

The first night was perfect. No rocking necessary.  Quinn just simply slept through the night in her crib.  I couldn't help, but  think, "we got this!

During night two, some rocking was required, but not much.  Again, I couldn't help, but  think, "we got this!

Night three and four, she ended up in our bed.  Fail.  After multiple hour long rocking sessions, it was just easier and more restful to have her in bed with us, plus it was Christmas Eve/Christmas, and we needed to be places and had things to do.

I believe she slept well/needed minimal rocking on Christmas night, but then she got a cold.  A pretty little cold, but it still meant she was stuffed up, and again it was easier to have her in bed with us, then sniffling and not sleeping in the rocking chair.

So, after all that, we got back on track.  Except for the other night when she stayed up until midnight.  She just wasn't tired, I guess.  There were no extra naps, or coffee laced yogurts involved, just a baby who wasn't ready for bed.

Last night went well.  She slept from 9:00 pm to 4:00 am, needed a quick rocking, and then slept until 8:30 am in her crib.

So, like I said mixed results.  Not a total success, but I feel like most nights I can rock her quickly and get her back to sleep in her crib now rather than bringing her to bed with us.

Oh, and yes we got a a new treadmill!  We got it all set up, but between my cold, Quinn's cold, and Dalan's stomach issues, it has yet to be really used. (We have not been the healthiest bunch this winter break.) But soon, and I will write up a proper update on the Carsellers get fit.

19 months

Dear Quinn,

Has it really already been another month?  Really?  Time is flying by, and you are are growing up right before our eyes.  You are such a fast learner, and a little wild child, I think you might be moving even faster than time, if that is possible.  Wow, what a month!

* You are in major speech development mode right now.  You say a ton of words and mimic even more.

* You express and understand emotions.  You hug yourself in delight  when something is cute.  Or in fear when you are "scare."

* You know your body parts.

* You can follow simple directions.

*  You have made a standing reservation in mom and dad's bed. In fact, I am typing this at 10 at night with you in my arms due to your refusal to sleep in your crib.

* You are difficult to clothe.  18 month tops and jammies, a six month waist, with longer legs.  Oy!  Keeping up with your reputation as a fashionita is hard these days.  Maybe mom needs to learn to tailor.

*  You are a fast learner, with new tricks every day.

*  You are silly and mischievous.

* You love animals and kids, and can be a little on the rough side.

*  You love toys and books.

*  You are so tiny, yet mighty.

*  You are so cute.

* You are excited for Christmas, and you know that Santa says, "ho."  You also claim to be on Santa's naughty list most of the time, but rubbing your fingers and saying, "naught, naught."

*  You give great hugs and kisses, but can be a little stingy with them.  You are always up for a good pat though.

* You love baths.

* You are eating better than ever.

Well, Little Miss Quinn, I would like to write more, but my arm is about to fall off.  We love you so very much!  Happy 19th month Birthday!

Loves!

Mama and Dada

She has two guy guys

This is her nice face, instead of naughty.

***A lot of these photos were taken using the reverse option on my phone. Quinn loves to see herself and make faces, and then look through the photos.  Poor quality, but she loves it and the photos are fun!

SF: Part One

We arrived in San Francisco in Thursday evening, and we picked up by Aubrey and Drake. Drake immediately started impressing us with his huge vocabulary and his knowledge of the world of trucks. I shared some animal crackers with him, which bonded us for the rest of the trip. This included me being on bathroom duty with him sometimes. He is very cute! Aubrey made us a wonderful dinner, and we just hung out, and let the kids play. It was fun and relaxing.

The next day, we decided to go to the San Francisco Zoo, and into the city to ride a trolley car. We did have a problem, there were six of us, and only five seats in the car. So, public transportation it was! We got a late start, and took BART (The train) into the city, and we then had to transfer to two different light rail trains. It took us two hours to get to the zoo, which is a long time when traveling with two kids under the age of three, but they were champions. The zoo was very cool! Quinn got to see bears, which she loves, and the zoo here in town does not have. We also rode a super fast train, and saw all the other cool animals. Then it got colder, and I was not prepared for the difference that a few degrees can make when you add in wind, and being by the water. Aubrey loaned us some socks for Quinn, and I tried to zip her up in my sweat shirt, only to break the zipper. We got back on the light rail trains, and headed toward the city. It was rush hour, and there was a Giants game, so it was very crowded. I got train sick.

The Bear Exhibit: Quinn ohhhhing at the polar bear, and Quinn riding a bear.

Photo Op: Quinn continues to refuse to pose in front of signs and pictures.

The Train: The Barrett Family, and Dalan and Quinn

Cold and Sleepy: Quinn

We got into the city, and had to run to Ross to buy a blanket for Quinn, and new sweatshirts for Dalan and me (Dalan left his at home.) We waited in line for the trolley. I was feeling ok, but not great. Dalan, Quinn, and Drake all got to take their first trolley ride. It was very fun. We got down to Fisherman's Warf, and it was especially cold, and it had gotten later and later. After a quick walk, we decided it was time to head back home. However, there was huge lines for the bus and for taxis. We were kind of stranded down there with no way to get back to the BART station. We ended up taking a very expensive limo ride, which made me beyond sick. I was pretty miserable at that point. We got on BART, and I made it home. Some rest and Tylenol made me feel better. We put the kiddos to be, and the adults enjoyed a gourmet meal from McDonalds at 11:00 pm. :-)

Trolley Ridin': The worst photos ever, but proof she rode one!

It was a fun and adventurous day! It was so fun to spend time with our friends, and get to take Quinn on her first public transportation, first trolley, and first limo ride!

Baby Got Back

Quinn is so busy, and always playing or moving onto the next activity in the blink of an eye. I was looking through my pictures, and realized that I have a ton of the back of her head.

Life of the party:
Quinn was topless and putting Piper's cone of shame on her head, but it looked like a lampshade. This is hopefully not a preview of her in college.

Curly Sue:
Quinn's hair is getting more and more of a wave to it. If I just let it dry, or especially if she plays in the rain, she gets some curls in the back. So cute. You can see the difference in these photos of when I have combed it straight and when I let it go.

Underground Railroad:
Quinn and Piper fit perfectly in the space between the wall and the couch. The both use it to get from Piper's bed to the hall and back. We call it the underground railroad. If you can't find Quinn, chances are she has gone to the underground railroad.

Toys:
We have basically finished turning our third bedroom into a playroom for Quinn. It has been nice to have all the toys out of the living room, and for Quinn to have a space to roam around in with all her stuff. It only took us two months, and about ten trips to the DI to get that room clean.

Here are two quick photos of the new playroom, including my DIY (with the help of Ali) project of Quinn's preemie clothes. I wanted to put some of her clothes in shadow boxes. It turned out nothing like I wanted, but from a distance it is ok.
