31 is the new 21!

Today, Dalan turned 31 years old! Hooray for birthdays! However, unlike me, he prefers to keeps his birthdays on the down low. I usually fight him on this, and plan some sort of birthday activity, but this year I went with his plan, and we had a lazy and low key weekend. It is HIS birthday after all. It felt a little weird to me, but I think he got the birthday he wanted and that is what is important.

So, I am going to just give a simple shout out, and wish Dalan a very happy birthday! You are the best, and we are going to have an exciting and wonderful year together! LOVES!

Stones

The last 14 months have been "stony" for the Carlson girls.

December, 2008- kidney stones for me. These were painfully passed the old fashioned way, and collected in a urine strainer.

Spring, 2009- gall stones for me. These were removed, along with my entire gall bladder through surgery.

February, 2010- a stone blocking Ali's salivary gland. After being prescribed antibiotics, Ali was "playing" with it, it popped out, and a bloody mess ensued. She saved the stone, which is about a millimeter in size. Gross! I am hoping she posts a picture on facebook.

Patti better watch out, I don't know what other types of stones you can get, but if the trend continues, she would be next to get stoned.

On the mend

Feeling better today.

The extra day of rest helped immensely.

So, did Dalan.

I realized I always get sick at this time of year.

Dalan and I got engaged two years ago today, and I immediately got sick after. Really sick, much sicker than I am now.

First, I went to the Instacare, the doctor was worthless, and basically shrugged his shoulders at me and accused me of antibiotic seeking.

I was like, dude, I hate "super bugs" too, but I can't breath so I came here to feel better.

He ended up prescribing me cough syrup with codeine (despite signs all over the clinic, stating no codeine would be prescribed.) He also left it up to me, if he was going to prescribe anything at all.

I was like, hey buddy, I did not realize that M.D. stood for "my decision."

The cough syrup made me hallucinate, and eventually, I ended up in my regular doctor's office, was prescribed antibiotics, and felt better within 12 hours.

Last year, I got sick at the end of the February/beginning of March.

It was just a cold similar to this cold, but I could take real medicine, and it made a difference.

If I could have taken some Nyquil, and gotten a good night's sleep, I think I would have bounced back much better.

However, I am hoping this is my body's farewell to winter, and hello to spring, because I am ready!

Spoke too soon

Just over a week ago, Becca and I were patting ourselves on the back that we had made it through cold and flu season while working in an elementary school without getting sick. We were rather proud of ourselves, and bragged to each other all the things we were doing right.....drinking plenty of water, taking our vitamins, etc. We were feeling quite smug. I think I even later retold my mom all the great things I was doing, and how I had successfully avoided getting sick!

THEN.....

We both got a cold. And this cold, has kicked my ass. I don't know if it is a particularly nasty cold, or if the fact that I am pregnant and can't take any good medicine is making it worse. But, I am miserable. I have a running nose, and a nasty cough. In fact, I coughed so much this morning I threw up, like a two year old might. It was horrible. Some home remedies are helping. I have taken several hot showers, and that seems to help. I have been using a saline nose spray, and that helps. I have tried hot lemon and honey water, but I don't really like hot drinks, and I had to choke it down.

I am debating whether I should go to work tomorrow. I am trying to save all my sick leave for when the little one makes its appearance, but I am pretty miserable, and have not gotten out of bed for two days. However, right now I am starting to feel better, but I can't imagine teaching all day feeling like I do now. Also, it is a pain to make a sub plan from home, but at this point, it might be worth the extra day of rest.

The good news is Dalan is taking super good care of me, the bad news is I feel guilty about it. I hate just lying (or is it laying? I never know) there, while he has to do everything around the house and for me.

Edited to Add: I stayed home. It was a good choice. I am still not at even close to 100%, and working would have been miserable.

The Hangover: An essay

A Three Month Hangover
also known as:
A Tribute to my First Trimester.

As my first trimester of pregnancy quickly (or slowly.....depends on my mood and the day) comes to an end this week, I thought it would be fitting to dedicate a blog entry to it.

Basically, I have felt hungover for most of my first trimester. Now, don't jump to conclusions, I have not had an alcoholic drink since long before I was even pregnant. We were actively (wink, wink) trying to get pregnant, and I was being very conscious of my alcohol intake. However, that did not stop the little fetus in my womb from causing some physical side effects very similar to those you experience when you are hungover.

I guess I should clarify, I am not talking hungover, like a Jimmy Buffett weekend in Vegas when you puke all over your hotel room, so Hazmat has to come clean up after you, and it takes days to feel normal again. (Not that I would know anything about feeling like that!)

I am talking hungover, like you had one too many glasses of wine, and you wake up feeling "off".

1. You may or may not feel slightly nauseous, but not enough to throw up. Most days I would feel like I had the potential to puke, but not necessarily, and this would usually fade after breakfast. Although I did throw up six times, which is nothing for some people, but it was six too many times in my opinion....so maybe that would be equivalent to a hangover with you two glasses of wine too many.

2. You feel extremely tired, no matter if you slept for six hours or for twelve. You have to muster all the energy you have to function throughout the day. In fact, when we went to Vegas, Dalan called me the sleeping machine. In order to participate in fun daytime and night time activities, I required what I like to call a "disco nap." A "disco nap" is a term I stole from Sex and the City, which means taking a nap so you can party into the wee hours of the night. However, since being pregnant I have required a "disco nap" just to make it through the evening. We use the term so much we just call it a "disco" for short. This has been my worse symptom by far.

3. You will need to eat food in order to feel slightly better. Sometimes, only toast or crackers will be the only things that work to make you feel better, but most of the time, greasy, delicious food works just as well, and sounds so much better. Bring on the grilled cheese sandwiches and quesidillas.

4. You will also feel dehydrated. Water sounds delicious, but not first thing in the morning. Sprite or ginger ale are about the only things I can stomach in the morning. Otherwise, I am thirsty throughout the whole day. Sometimes in the beginning, I would forget to drink enough and get a headache, but I am getting better at keeping hydrated throughout the day.

However, I am pleased to report that most of these symptoms started to disappear around week 10 of my pregnancy, and even the fatigue has gotten better. Don't get me wrong, I took a quick "disco" today after work and before going to Costco with my mom and sister tonight, but I could have made it through the night without one. I am not going to lie, I am very excited to be exiting my first trimester of pregnancy this week, and entering the infamous second trimester. The trimester that is suppose to be the most tolerable and enjoyable. I say bring it on!

B-A-N-A-N-A-S

For the last nine months, I have been obsessed with bananas. They are my breakfast food of choice. I also enjoy a banana with a bowl of Cherrios in the evening as a bedtime snack. However, I am married to a man that does not like fruit. Weird-o! He will eat apples, and that is about it. I don't get it. It blows my mind. Fruit is like candy. I love fruit. Anyway, since Dalan does not do his share of banana eating, sometimes a few bananas get really ripe before I can get through the bunch. Therefore, for the last nine months, I have been obsessed with banana nut muffins. I could only make muffins, because as you may remember, I did not own a bread pan (or a muffin tin, but you can use those foil cupcake papers on a cookie sheet.) However, Christmas changed that all(thanks Hilary and Greg!), so now I am also obsessed with banana nut bread. I have a loaf in the oven right now. Yum! I am anxiously awaiting a warm piece with some butter on it. I also bought some chocolate milk today, which is another one of my food obsessions that has developed in the last year. I think I have the perfect bedtime snack, and it is almost justifiably healthy. Ha!

Snoop Bloggy Blog

I have hit a major wall when it comes to blogging. I just can't seem do it. I want to do it. I want to part of the blogging community, and get awesome comments about my awesome life from my awesome friends, but I just can't get the ideas in my head to translate into any real type of post.

First of all, I cooled off on blogging when I found out I was pregnant, because it was all that was on my mind, but we were keeping it on down low, so my blogs felt fake and dishonest. Here I had some pretty major news, and I was blogging about everything else, when I just wanted to type, I AM PREGNANT!!!!! However, even though it is out in the open now, I find it difficult to blog about, it is like I trained myself to not blog about the one thing I had been dying to write about....go figure. Ironic, isn't it?

Secondly, my computer broke, and I could not blog for weeks on end. So, I got super out of practice, and seem to have lost my mojo for making everyday events into (semi) interesting blogs. I will get an idea, and go to type it, and only come up with a sentence or two. And those two sentences are lame and uninteresting.

So, here I am, blogging about blogging. I am hoping this post will be my slump buster, and I will be back to blogging on the reg. in no time.

I am really worried about the Science Fair!

Over the weekend, my subconscious was apparently really concerned about the upcoming Science Fair at school. I talked in my sleep about not once, but twice.

First time:

I woke up and told Dalan to get out his booklet for his science project.

Second time:

I sat straight up in bed, and asked Dalan if that noise I was hearing meant it was time to turn in our science fair projects.

I hate when I bring work home with me!!!!

Sports Discussion

If Michael Jordan is the greatest basketball player ever? Who is the Michael Jordan of other sports? My family and I have been discussing this, and we are having the hardest time with baseball and football.

Here is what we have come up with:

Golf: Tiger Woods or Jack Nicklaus

Hockey: Wayne Gretsky, Bobby Orr

Swimming: Michael Phelps or Mark Spitz

Tennis: Rodger Federer/ Serena Williams

Football: Dick Butkus, Walter Payton, Joe Namath, OJ Simpson

Baseball: Willie Mays, Hank Aaron, Ted Williams, Pete Rose

Cycling: Lance Armstrong

Quidditch: Harry Potter

Other basketball greats: Wilt Chamberlin, Magic Johnson, Kareem Abul Jabbar, John Stockton (the pasty gangster).

Who would be on your list?????

May I have your attention, please?

Dalan and I are pleased to announce that we will be expecting the arrival of our first offspring (not counting Piper) sometime at the end of summer. So, that makes me currently 11 weeks pregnant. Hooray for babies. The timing is horrible for a school teacher, but we are still super psyched.
