Some people

People love to remind me Quinn almost/could have died. Weird, right? At least half of the conversations I have with casual acquaintances/co-workers about Quinn lead to this subject. I would think it would poor manners to remind a mother that her baby was so sick, but people love to bring it up. I get it- she has an amazing story. She is amazing, but do I really need to be reminded daily that my baby could have died, and that I am so lucky she didn't? I was there after all, in the trenches, dealing with a failing pregnancy and then a super tiny, micro-preemie.

Most conversations with these type of people go one of three ways.

Scenario 1:

Person: How is your baby doing?
Me: Really well.
Person: That is amazing. You are so lucky/blessed.
Me: Yes, we are very lucky.
Person (whispering): You know a lot of babies her size don't make it/ You are lucky she is even here.

Scenario 2:

Person: How is your baby doing?
Me: Ok, she is still struggling to eat.
Person: Well, you should feel blessed that you even have her/It is amazing she is even alive.
Me: Yes, I know.

Scenario 3:

Person: How is your baby doing?
Me: Really well.
Person: (stares at me)
Me: She is hitting all her developmental milestones.
Person: (just continues to stare at me until I say something like....)
Me: We are very lucky that things turned out so well.

*This is not meant to offend. I really do love everyone's support! It is just a weird conversation to have with people I barely/casually know over and over again. Most of the time, I have this same conversation with the same person multiple times.

Plus, I am exhausted. Quinn's alarm is killing me, as is being back at work after a nice, long winter's break. Hopefully, happy and optimistic Jessi will be back before we know it.

Keep on, keeping on

First of all, I am feeling way better about things. Just needed to vent a little. Quinn and I have been keeping up the breast feeding, and I think it is going well. Her weight gain (her overall weight gain, not when doing the "test" weights) has been good and steady, and she is well on her way to six pounds. She took almost a full bottle from Dalan this afternoon, so even if they never believe she is getting a full feeding from the breast, they can see her progress on the bottle. I am just going to try to not stress about it. Thanks for all the nice comments, made me feel totally supportive and not alone.

Quinn agrees that breast feeding is a good idea, and gave me a little "power to the people" sign.

(solidarity)

Next, Dalan and I had a funny little happening in our neighborhood this afternoon. He took Piper on a walk while I did some things, and started pumping. When he got home, he told me that there were some four year olds doorbell ditching up and down the street, so if someone knocked/rang, that it was probably them. He went to clean out his truck, while I was pumping. All of a sudden our front door opens, follows by a little arm. I let out a weird little scream, the dog barked, and Dalan told them to get out. He left. Dalan told them they could not just go into someone's house without knocking and being invited in. They then asked if they could come in our house, he said no. They asked why not. He told them because he was busy. They moved on to the next house, and Dalan came in and locked the door for me. Not two minutes later, I can hear them trying to get back in. They then asked Dalan if he had a baby or a son for them to play with. He told them no, and headed back toward the house, and the little twerps tried to follow him the house! He practically had to slam the door in their faces, all while I was pumping. They finally left, and Dalan watched them bust in to a house across the street. Crazy kids!

Peeping Tom

What would you do if you looked out your baby's third story window and saw a man peeking into her crib?

Would you take a picture? That is what we did!

And then we watched him for awhile and hoped he would make it over to the other window while we were still there.

It was cool. And loud, but mostly cool.

Dalan wants to start doing the same thing. He was in awe. I was pretty impressed too.

Have you ever watched a window washer on a multiple story building? It is awesome.
